bummer

So yesterday I got an e-mail from the communications giant I interviewed with. Unfortunately, I didn't get the internship. I'm kinda bummed. I was really hoping to get that internship. I feel like there was so much to learn there. Oh well.
Next Friday, a week from today, I have an interview with a full-service advertising/marketing/pr agency. This is really exciting.
The way it has worked so far:
we (all of the applicants) e-mailed the head of the tcom dept. our cover letter and resume
they (the head of tcom and the company) narrowed us down to 6 people to interview with the company
there are 4 positions available: 2 for summer, 1 for fall and 1 for spring - that means only 2 people aren't going to be offered a position

so for the interview we (the applicants) have to come up with a 9-12 minute presentation about why this company needs to hire me.

I really want this one - it's full-time, its 6 credit hours, and it's paid!

No matter what happens, I still have the internship at the radio station in Indy. I feel like this place is the where I'll have to most fun. And everyone tells me that you learn a lot more at smaller companies, so we'll see what happens.

New Direction

So, I'm going to keep you updated on the whole internship stuff but I'm doing other cool stuff, too.
For example, I'm currently working on a film called "Death By Suicide: A Documentary Story" as a 2nd assistant cinematographer. Basically, that means I'm in charge of the slate. I like it though. I wish I could do a little more, but actually what I do is pretty time consuming.

What is a 2nd assistant cinematographer?
Basically,on this film anyway, it means there is the cinematographer, the head camera person, the one that actually uses the camera and calls out the time codes. Then there is his assistant, known as the 1stAC. The 1stAC makes sure that the batteries are charged, the tapes are labeled correctly, and helps the head camera person setup the equipment. Then there is me, the 2ndAC, which means I am the assistants assistant. When it's explained like that, it sounds really lame, but it's much cooler than that. I actually think it's more interesting than the job the 1stAC has.
I am the person who writes on the slate that is seen before action is called. I get to see every scene and every take.

What is a slate?
The slate is the chalkboard looking thing that has important information for the editors such as scene, take, director, producer, date, and of course the title. When you see it tv, they usually say something like "Scene 24 Take 12" and then the little bar at the top of the slate slams down as "Action!" is called.

Change things up a bit

So, I was thinking... and I decided this shouldn't only be about internships because then when my internship is over, the blog is over. Whatever, it's mine and I can do with it what I want and besides that, I only have one follower so I can do what I want.
Today is Friday!!! whoop whoop!
5 weeks of school left before finals... that's pretty exciting as well.
I don't know... I don't have much for now. Maybe I'll be back later, we'll see!

Okay, so here's the deal. Last week, I had an interview at a talent agency in Chicago that I wanted sooooooooo badly and another in Indy at a communications giant that I didn't want so much. I was totally stressing out because I was worried about being gone and how it would effect my daughter if I took the one in Chicago. Well, the big guy in the sky calmed my fears.
I went to the interview at the talent agency and was so disappointed. She actually told me, "I've had past interns be upset and say things like, 'If you wanted a receptionist, you should have hired one, not an intern.'" I was offered the internship... I didn't accept it.
Well, I'm so gold that I was told that. I want an internship where I can get some real experience and have some great things to put down on my resume.
Oddly enough, the communications giant in Indy sounds like just the place for me. They have so much going on. They want you to learn, experience anything they offer, and really get something out of the internship. Another great thing about this place is they do 98% of the hiring from within. Typical upward movement is intern, part-time, full-time.
I love the fact that they have locations all over the United States. Even if you change locations or departments within the same company you still have a much better chance of getting hired than someone who has never worked for this corporation before.
They have multiple radio stations, a huge website with many facets, and many magazines both in Indy and other states.
Its funny how things turn around. The stress has been lifted from my shoulders.... Now, I just need an offer.

This week I was contacted by another modeling agency in Chicago for an interview. I've decided I don't want to intern at a modeling or talent agency.... too bad I applied to like 1900 of them!
Oh well!
It's nice having options!

There is also an advertising agency in Indy that I am interested in. To apply you have to prepare a 15 minute presentation on yourself and why they should hire you. I'm going to try for it. It pays, it's in Indy, and it would also be an amazing resume booster.

More internship interview

Okay, sorry it's been so long!!!
Here's the update. Today is Friday...the beginning of SPRING BREAK!!!!
So... when you think of Spring Break what comes to your mind? Sun? Sand? Partying?
Well, not for me.
My Spring Break is going to consist of interviews. I know, right? but actually I'm really excited.
Like I said in my last blog (forever ago!) I've been offered one at a radio station in Indy.
Monday, I have an interview for a talent agency in Chicago. I'm pretty excited about it. So Sunday a few friends and I are going to the city for a few days.
We are coming back Tuesday though (short, I know.) but I have to be back for another interview at a Communications giant. The one I am interviewing for is in Indy, but they have locations in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.
That's really exciting for me because those are all of the cities I love! They have 4 radio stations, multiple websites, and even a magazine! There are sooooooo many opportunities to learn a variety of skills.
What more can a potential intern ask for?
Not much, but my heart is set one internship that I haven't heard back from yet. They told me March or April so keep your fingers crossed!!!!!

My quest for the Perfect Internship!

Okay, so I started applying for internships around October. I'm looking for one in the summer. I figured I'd get a head start, but but all that has done for me is give me more time to question what I'm doing!
I'm going to summarize my internship application process thus far and then keep everyone updated on what happens in the future.
I go to Ball State University. I'm majoring in Organizational Communications and minoring in Telecommunications. I have a good gpa and a great resume (keeping in mind I'm still in college). I've worked on a feature film, produced the school's movie channel, and help produce the school's news show that serves the entire county.
So, I've applied to several internships and had a great response thus far. I've been offered an internship doing promotions/pr/marketing at a radio station in Indianapolis, it doesn't pay but it offers school credit. I have a phone interview for a huge communications company in Indianapolis tomorrow. It's a paid internship. I have an interview for a huge reputable talent agency in Chicago that I'm really excited about. I've wanted this internship since I first saw it, it's not a paid internship but I think this would be a great way to get my foot in the door of this industry. The interview is in May, so I'll let you know how it goes. Also, I applied to the Travel Channel for a pr internship. They called me in November, but they were calling for a spring internship. They asked if they could save my resume and give me a call back in March or April. I said "of course". This offers school credit and hourly pay. The pay is pretty high considering they don't have to pay you at all, so I figure it would be great experience. I don't think they are going to pay as much as they do for you to get coffee.
I don't mind being a gopher at all. I'll get the coffee and take out the trash, but I don't want that to be all that I do. I want to get some good experience in an industry that is hard to break into. I want to really learn different aspects of this field so that I can discover if this is the route I want to go.
I'll keep you posted on opportunities I've been given and which I accept and how that goes.
